Dr. Maria Montessori was an inspirational Italian physician, who developed an educational approach based on her observations on the way that children learn. She began her philosophy working with children who had special educational needs and the results were so remarkable that she decided to develop the approach to work with all children.
Montessori’s view was that children have an almost effortless ability to absorb knowledge from a well-prepared environment. She used this knowledge to create a method of teaching that allows children the freedom of a prepared environment with carefully chosen materials. She believed that by working independently, children learned to do things for themselves and reached new levels of understanding, and that by treating children as individuals she would fulfill the potential for each child and make their learning more effective.
